Historic Moment

Councillor Linda Ashley the new mayor

Councillor Linda Ashley

For the first time in history Chatteris Town Council elected the Mayor virtually via Zoom. Councillor Linda Ashley was re-elected as Mayor for a second term of office on the 5th May 2020. Councillor Ian Benney was re-elected as Deputy Mayor, also for a second term. All but one of the 12 councillors was able to attend the meeting which proceeded smoothly without any real problems.

The meeting was recorded and a copy of that recording will be given to the Town’s Museum for posterity as Councillors recognise that the Covid-19 Crisis will be a major historic topic in future years.

VE Day – 8th May

The Chatteris Royal British Legion and Chatteris Town Council have cancelled the planned VE Day commemorations on the 8th May due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe, which signalled the end of WW2. The RBL is suggesting that we flood the town with red, white and blue bunting to mark the occasion instead. So, they are asking everyone around the town to make some bunting (or use union flags if you have them) and display them on your property for May 8th.

Please share with everyone you know and let’s get the flags out for our veterans.

Festival Cancellation

Chatteris Midsummer Festival committee wishes to let you know that it was with great regret that they took the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Festival, which was due to take place on the 27th and 28th June.

There were a number of factors behind the decision taken by the committee, Fenland District Council and Chatteris Town Council. The decision followed government advice and guidelines and the principal consideration was public safety; with the country gripped by the Cornonavirus pandemic the committee had been told that emergency cover for major events would be unavailable until July at the earliest.

However we can promise you that the Midsummer Festival will be back next year, bigger and better than ever. We will carry forward this year’s theme of Fairy Tales and Folklore and after six months of planning we hope all the events and attractions lined up will go ahead next year and with any luck we hope to be able to bring even more attractions to the event.

In the meantime if life returns to normal during the summer we hope to be able to stage one of the exciting new attractions planned for this year’s Festival – the Colour Fun Run. The date has yet to be confirmed so watch this space!

Coronavirus

In light of the current Coronavirus crisis Chatteris Town Council has taken the difficult, but understandable, decision to cancel and postpone a number of events.

The official opening of the Little Acre Pocket Park,  which was due to take place on the 25th April has been postponed to a date to be decided. However the Park is of course open so please pop along and enjoy the fresh air and views.

The commemorations being planned to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day on the 8th May 2020 have been cancelled.

The Connections Bus youth club and the youth club at the King Edward Centre, both financed by the Town Council, are closed until it is considered safe for them to open again.

Plans to launch a new bus service to Peterborough, using FACT buses, on the 4th April has been postponed until the crisis is over.

Finally Fenland District Council has yet to make a decision on whether the Midsummer Festival will go ahead this year. Please watch this space.

2020 Chatteris Midsummer Festival

The theme of the 2020 Chatteris Midsummer Festival is Fairy Tales and Folklore. Two groups have already chosen which fairy tale they wish to depict in the parade. To register an interest in a particular fairy or folk tale email clerk@chatteristowncouncil.gov.uk. The Festival will be held on the 27th and 28th June 2020 and lots of exciting ideas are already being discussed.

Connections Bus

The County Council Connections Bus will be in the car park at Jack’s Supermarket on Tuesday’s from 6.30pm to 8pm.

Children in years 7-11 are invited along to take part in fun activities and themed sessions giving them skills for life. Entry is free.

Midsummer Festival

Chatteris Midsummer Festival was another great success thanks to the wonderful weather and the support of all those who attended.

Hundreds took part in the walking parade through the centre of the town. Once at the field visitors could enjoy a host of activities including wrestling shows, inflatables, fairground rides, music and more. In the evening the Party in the Park was the busiest ever with well over 1,000 people enjoying music from live bands and performers, a DJ set, foam cannon and lights show.

Sunday began with the horse show and fun dog show and concluded with a tug of war contest for all ages from tiny tots to those who should really know better! Plenty of visitors also popped along to the marquee and indulged in a cream tea.

The event was organised by Chatteris Town Council and Fenland District Council and would not have been possible without the loyal support of a team of hard working volunteers including Festival Chairman Sharon Selman.

Tree Planting Succes

Chatteris Mayor Councillor Bill Haggata with children planting a tree. The Mayor of Chatteris, Councillor Bill Haggata, is pictured with young helpers at the family tree planting day at Little Acre Fen Pocket Park in November.

In a great show of community spirit over 50 people descended on the site to help plant trees and hedgerows around the park which is being developed by Chatteris Town Council.

All the saplings had been generously donated by local people and representatives of organisations including the Town Council, Chatteris in Bloom, Chatteris Street Pride and Chatteris Past, Present and Future, Little Bloomers, the cubs and brownies joined families in giving up their time to enhance the environment for future generations.

The Council is very grateful to everyone who turned up to help and those who donated trees and hedging. The aim is to create a space where everyone can enjoy the vast open skies of the Fens and to link in with the Old Railway Line Footpath to form a circular walk.

Anyone willing to join the Friends of Little Acre Pocket Park group or requiring more information about the project please contact the Town Clerk on 695166 or email clerk@chatteristowncouncil.gov.uk

Does the Council have any records about WW2?
I’m interested in the London Schools that were evacuated there.
